My love for ancient heritage sites traces its roots to my childhood when my dad took me to cities where I got to see relics of the past that displayed our culture and history. As an adult whenever I got time off my work, I would choose a place to sightsee its fabulous locations.

This time I decided to visit the capital city of India, Delhi, which is splattered with huge monuments, temples and forts. I booked my Amritsar to Delhi flights journey onboard Jet Airways.

Journey to Delhi by Flight and Staying At the Majestic Sisley Hotel

The journey from Amritsar to Delhi onboard Jet Airways was comfortable and short as it lasted for one hour and ten minutes during which time we were served light refreshments. After touchdown at the Delhi airport, I took an airport cab to the hotel.

Sisley the Boutique Hotel offers a distinctly elegant and charming ambience. My room had a cozy décor and was fitted with plush bedding, television, fridge, air conditioner, attached baths etc.

What surprised me the most was the fruit baskets filled everyday with luscious fruits. The restaurant offered multi-cuisine dishes that satisfied my pallet to the utmost. Both the ethnic as well as the international dishes were tasty, relishing, leaving me wanting for more.

I booked a cab to visit the many places that I had put down in my itinerary such as Lodi Gardens, India Gate, Gandhi National Museum etc.

Visiting Monuments and Temples

Out of the many places I stopped over, visiting the Red Fort was a tremendous experience due to magnificence of the structure and the historical significant that lay behind it. It is made from red sandstone and displays majestic Persian architecture.

The huge monument was used by Mughal emperors for early two hundred years until 1857. Today it is a UNESCO designated world heritage site and one where the national flag is hoisted very independence day. The fort is a massive complex of buildings, which were used by the Mughal emperor and it his huge household. Today, it showcases many interesting artworks, which can be viewed by a tour.

My next stopover was the Tughlaqabad Fort. It is a massive fort, lying 6 kilometers from Delhi and lies in ruins. I was impressed by the grandness of the structure as well as its dilapidated state. The place was built by the Ghiyas-ud-din-Tughlaq, who established the Tughlaq Dynasty, in 1321. However six years later it was abandoned. It is not just a fort, but a city inside the huge walls of the fort, which at one time also housed residential areas. The walls of the fort were splattered with bastions and parapets. The massive fort is said to have 52 gates, out of which only 13 remains intact today.

My next stopover was at the lovely Akshardam temple. What amazed me about the structure are its massive size and the huge ornamentation that can be seen on the outside and inside. In all there are 234 carved pillars and 148 life size elephant statues here. The temple has 20000 Sadhus statues and inside the temple is the idol of Swaminarayan in Abhayamudra pose.

The temple also has idols of Gods Rama, Krishna, and Shiva-Parvati etc. Its garden is a fabulous sight with its magnificent sculptures, trees, shrubs and manicured lawns. After a week of sightseeing, I returned back to Amritsar by flight with lots of good memories of this trip.
